GWAPP looks to the 21st century and a united Greenpoint The Greenpoint
Waterfront Association for Parks and Planning has been in existence
since 2000. In that time it has brought hope for a powerful new
consensus in our community. GWAPP gives the community a forum, it
energizes us to do the work that indifferent outsiders think we won't
bother to do.
In April 2000 an array of civic groups and angry citizens spontaneously came together to defeat secret plans to build a 500 Megawatt power plant in the heart of Greenpoint. In a moving display of popular willpower, the GWAPP coalition triumphed, and then rapidly transformed itself into the organization our community long dreamed would someday come into being: a common meeting place for our besieged community to share vital information and plan concrete action, not as a jumble of differing interests, but as a united front:
GWAPP now boasts an active roster of over 40 neighborhood civic, cultural, activist groups and religious institutions. The quarterly GWAPP meetings have quickly become "the place to be" for anyone who wants to know what's really happening. Our community for years and years has demanded the City stop treating us as a junkyard and industrial wasteland. We have demanded access to our beautiful waterfront; we have demanded an end to toxic nightmares, and the right for our children to grow up in a healthy environment.
Our community came together to craft a 197-A plan that could make Greenpoint the envy of urban planners everywhere and bequeath to our children the safe and beautiful neighborhood they deserve. A strong, united GWAPP can and will make this plan a reality.
Today, we face new challenges. The proposition by TransGas Energy to build and operate a 1,100 megawatt power plant on the East River at N. 12th St. jeopardizes the communities 197a plan that calls for open space and residential/commercial development on our waterfront.
Folks, let's use this opportunity to get our Greenpoint permanently on
track! GET INVOLVED! Our steering committee meetings are open to the public.
