GWAPP Issue:

New York City Waterfront Revitalization

THE PROJECT

Once thriving with water-related industry, the Greenpoint/Williamsburg waterfront fell into neglect and was sought after by solid waste companies and power plant developers. After years of developing "197a" plans and advocating for the rezoning of our waterfront- in May, 2005 the City approved significant zoning changes to our waterfront and some upland areas. As many issues relating to this rezoning were core to GWAPP's mission- we were involved on many levels. GWAPP retained consultants to assist the community in Parks and Open Space Issues, (see "Greenpoint/Williamsburg Open Space Initiative" link under "Issues), and proposed alternate height and bulk massing to reduce the building height and quanitity of new construction proposed by DCP. GWAPP was a member of the North Brooklyn Alliance, a new entity devoted to disseminating information about the rezoning to Community Board Residents. 7 GWAPP board members served in various capacities on the Community Board 1 Rezoning Task Force- the entity charged with working with representing our community and working to get the best plan possible for our neighborhoods. Check this page and the "Open Space Initiative" pages regularly for the latest information.

Now that the rezoning has been approved, GWAPP will be working to ensure the community gets what it was promised, and will help with the planning of the new parks and open space.

OUR MISSION

GWAPP is dedicated to fostering the creation of parks and residential and commercial development on North Brooklyn's East River waterfront. We believe that this process will help balance the environmental burdens that have been typically associated with this area of Brooklyn. GWAPP recognizes, however, that waterfront revitalization must be balanced with the need to retain community character and protecting members of the Greenpoint/Williamsburg community that may be adversely effected by development.
