THE PROJECT
Made possible by a generous grant from the J.M. Kaplan Fund, GWAPP will soon begin Phase 1 of this project- design and construction documents. To be located at the end of India Street on the East River, this street-end park will follow the design guidelines set forth in the rezoning. The park will provide Greenpoints' VERY FIRST "legal" access to our East River Waterfront. In addition, this will give the community the opportunity to "try out" the design guidelines set forth in the zoning resolution and attempt to make revisions if required prior to developers beginning construction on the balance of the esplanade.
In the coming months we will be meeting with city agencies to kick-off the process. We will then establish a steering committee consisting of area residents and representatives from city agencies. After a community meeting to discuss the park, the steering committee will prepare a Request for Proposals, (RFP), to retain professional consultants. This project requires a licensed landscape architect, civil engineer and structural engineer to perform the work and prepare the required drawings and documents for bidding and construction. We anticipate the completion of Phase 1 in the Spring of 2005.
On 7/3/05 Governor Pataki announced the 2004 recipients of Environmental Protection Fund Grants for Waterfront Development Projects. GWAPP, sponsored by the Brooklyn Borough President's office, received $75,000.00 toward the construction of the new park. In addition to the above, GWAPP is currently applying for funding from other sources for the funds needed to construct the project. We hope to commence construction in early summer of 2005.

| OUR MISSION
After 5 years of FIGHTING AGAINST things the community does not want, GWAPP finally has the opportunity to CREATE something we all want!
The rezoning currently proposed for the Greenpoint/Williamsburg waterfront will EVENTUALLY result in a 1.6 mile waterfront esplanade. Under the current scheme, this will be built one block at a time as each parcel is purchased and developed by private developers. GWAPP has decided to "jump start" the process by building THE FIRST SEGMENT of that esplanade.
